Mansfield Independent School District was awarded an incentive check for $34,545 from the Oncor SCORESM (Schools Conserving Resources) Program for improving lighting and HVAC efficiency throughout their school district. The program is offered by Oncor to select school districts and cities to help improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. The check was presented at the regular school board meeting on November 25, 2008.

The incentive amount was determined by the total amount of energy the district will save. The more efficient lighting and HVAC systems installed by Mansfield ISD will save 354,672 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of over 28,600 gallons of gasoline, according to Environmental Protection Agency calculations. The equipment will also yield an annual energy savings of approximately $40,000.

MISD Maintenance Manager Mark Williamson said, “The incentive from Oncor certainly validates our investment in energy efficiency. It’s important that our school district sets a positive example for our community, and reducing our energy use is a critical step.”

The SCORE Program facilitated a focused look at opportunities to maximize the energy efficiency of lighting and HVAC systems at Mansfield ISD. The program also worked with the school district to involve personnel from all departments in the decision-making process so that everyone understood the financial benefits of investing in the projects. “Energy efficiency just makes sound financial sense. Even though higher-performing equipment can cost more initially, the reduced energy use more than offsets that very quickly,” said Jeff Brogden, Director of Facilities and Operations.

“We identified a real need for an energy efficiency program that specifically targets schools, especially as school budgets are spread thin,” said Buddy Bridges, Local Area Manager for Oncor. “This program is an organized effort to bring needed resources and energy efficiency to Texas schools. By partnering with the school district to reduce energy costs, these valuable saved resources can be used for other needed projects.”

The SCORE Program is being implemented for Oncor by CLEAResult Consulting.
Oncor is a regulated electric distribution and transmission business that provides reliable electricity delivery to consumers. Oncor operates the largest distribution and transmission system in Texas, providing power to 3 million electric delivery points over more than 102,000 miles of distribution and 14,000 miles of transmission lines. While Oncor is a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings Corp., Oncor is a separate entity with a separate board that is comprised of a majority of independent directors.
